Statement by the Brothers of St John of God regarding the sentencing of former Brother Bernard McGrath.

The St John of God Brothers deeply regret that any child was harmed in our care.

We acknowledge with sorrow and shame the abuse perpetrated by this former member of the Order and the terrible consequences of his crimes on the spiritual and psychological well-being of his victims.

To all those who were abused by this man, we offer our unreserved apology for what happened and for the hurt and pain you have endured.

In acknowledging the sentence of the court, our hope is that the judicial process brings some measure of validation and sense of justice to all those involved.

While we cannot change the past, we are committed to continuing to respond justly and compassionately to those who have experienced abuse in our care.
